Starbucks Dweller Hypothesis

The micro culture that I have decided to observe for Unit 2 is the people that spend hours upon hours in the Starbucks coffee shop. I like to call them the “Starbucks dwellers.” This was not the original group that I wrote my initial observation blogs about, but I feel that this micro culture will be a better fit for my purposes in this unit. I have never spent much time in Starbucks myself, just the occasional stops to get a warm beverage. I choose to study in my room more than any other location such as the library or Starbucks. Some people I know do find it more favorable to study in Starbucks rather than in the dorm because of the atmosphere that does not encompass as many distractions.
This very observation is the basis for my hypothesis. The “Starbucks dwellers” choose to spend time in Starbucks to have a more work-friendly environment, one in which distractions are less frequent and large supplies of caffeine are readily available. The hours of the Starbucks provide an environment where people can come and study late into the night while having caffeinated beverages at hand to help them stay awake. Furthermore, the “Starbucks dwellers” accumulate at Starbucks to study in a social environment to do group work or just to have a friend close by to help against getting discouraged.
This study will serve as a basis for understanding how and where students prefer to do work. This knowledge would be essential for the university to continue to provide and expand the facilities available for its students. The success of the student highly depends upon the resources available to them, including the study facilities that are not only accessible, but appealing for the students.

  2. first of all i would just like to say that one of my friends is your typical "starbucks dweller"...shes practically lives there. haha

i think that your hypothesis isnt overstated and is clear and arguable. some people would say that starbucks is very distracting because there are people coming in and out all the time and there is constantly music playing in the background. I think that you've got yourself a good hypothesis that will last through the unit project.

  3. Your first paragraph is personal and conversational - try to make it sound more academic. You should say more about why this group interests you. Also, your hypothesis is not clearly stated - you say what your observations are of this group but you don't really say what you will be testing.

  4. I like the idea of your hypothesis, but I don't think it's testable by observation. You wouldn't be able to tell if someone chose Starbucks because of the friendly working environment by watching them. Instead maybe your hypothesis could be something like "Starbucks Dwellers" order coffee to help them study, which could be observed by seeing if they order coffee before they start working.
